The Carl Sandburg College men’s basketball team took undefeated and top-ranked South Suburban down to the wire, but the Bulldogs held on to defeat the Chargers 75-71 on Thursday afternoon at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

KEY MOMENTS

  • Sandburg (11-5) took a 36-35 lead on a drive from Carter Fayhee (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) to open the second half, but South Suburban (16-0), No. 1 in the NJCAA Division II rankings each of the last three weeks, scored the next six to take the lead for good.
  • The Bulldogs couldn’t open up a double-digit lead until two Rhyss Lewis free throws with 4:34 to go, but Sandburg clawed within 68-64 after Scott Gowan (Rockford, Ill./Rockford East) sank three foul shots with 1:03 left.
  • A Fayhee 3-pointer off a steal, followed by two more Fayhee free throws after another turnover closed the Chargers’ deficit to 71-69 with :19.2 left, but Jason Towers hit four straight free throws to seal the victory for South Suburban.

Freshman Noah Young (Colfax, Ill./Ridgeview), who came in as the national leader in free-throw shooting at 95.3 percent, went 14 of 16 from the line and finished with 16 points to tie for the team lead.
